Jean Tripier explores the instant when one reaches the shifting border of the ordinary and gets the glimpse of a new perception. In this very instant, the viewer is captured or hypnotized in the present moment.
His current project -Sur le fil de la Beauté- explores the feminine visage and form and reaches the edge where beauty is stunningly evident and yet disturbing or haunting at the same time. In order to achieve this delicate imbalance he boldly uses every technique and media possible to create images that combine layers of instinctive freehand drawings, washes and brushstrokes with complex, nearly invisible tonal compositions.
He adds these layers in a very rapid fashion to create his trademark flowing quality of working and style -one that doesn't tolerate any mistake or regret. An avid surfer, he purposely brings these qualities from surfing across his art.
The resulting paintings show play of light and transparency that only extremely thin and diluted layers can create. The resulting effects reveal the vibrations of pausing the present moment.
Tripiers' work has received numerous awards and has been selected by and published in magazines such as American Illustration, International Artist Magazine, Versal, Direct Art or Open Studio. He exhibits internationally, having participated in his first exhibition in Paris in 1988 and held his first solo show at the Museum of Prints in Bucharest, Romania in 1998. His first solo exhibition in the US was held at the art gallery of the Monterey Peninsula College in 2003.
Born and raised in France, he now lives and work in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco.
