As the year draws to a close, I take the time to drawn the self portrait. This is something I have now been doing for about five years and even though the series is short it is dense… very dense. Here is my self portrait for year end 2012, as I look into the mirror and face 2013. I took the reference photograph for that drawing the day of a bad surf wipeout that left me with seven stitches just over the right eye; my eyebrow was still covered in dried blood.

Painted in ink and watercolor on Arches paper, with multiple manipulations in Photoshop to harden the drawing -that’s where the thin photographic layer comes from. A drawing of a reflection in the mirror reflects itself into the image.
