The bureaucrat
While writing this and looking for pictures of Adolf Eichmann in the Internet (I ended up using one that was published by Time during his trial), I came across this site which describes a little know aspect of the fight to save the Jews of Budapest against Eichmann. The story of Raoul Wallenberg also shows how Eichmann went beyond his normal duties to make sure no Jews would escape, even disobeying direct orders from his superior to stop the massacre in the last few days of the war.
The capture of Eichmann is described in a captivating book by ex-Mossad agent Peter Malkin who led the operation in Buenos Aires.
Raoul Wallenberg is an amazing historical character and a great example of what people can become when they are willing to take a stand. His duel with Eichmann is like a modern incarnation of the struggle between good and evil. Thinking about his solitary death causes me a pretty grim mood.
